What is Pipe Spool?

A pipe Spool is the assembly of pipes connected through flanges and fittings. Long pipes are connected through flanges and bolted with another pipe with matching flanges. The assembly is sent to the construction site pre-mounted. The system of pipes is installed inside the concrete wall, and the concrete is poured on it. It is ensured that the system is aligned correctly to withstand the weight of concrete pouring. There are two components of Pipe Spooling: Pipe Spool production and Pipe spool site installation.

Application of Pipe Spool:

Pipe Spool assembly has a wide range of applications in particular industries. Pipe Spools are used in different industries because of their agile nature. Specific parts of the spool system can be arranged in various sizes and shapes for the target application. We divide pipe applications into household applications, industrial applications (factories), and construction applications.

Household applications:

A pipe spool is used in households due to its high corrosion resistance. The entire piping system of the house is composed of stainless-steel pipes and spools.

Industrial applications:

To remove the exhaust gases and liquids from the production areas, there should be a proper system of pipe spool assembly. Power plants’ energy and some raw materials are transported using complex spool systems. Some complex spool systems are preferred in industries where space constraints cause difficulties. In addition, extremely long pipeline systems are also used for energy transportation (oil, natural gas, etc.). These extremely long piping systems have various spool sections of different sizes and shapes.

Construction applications:

Pipe spool plays an essential role in construction sites. The required pipe material is usually steel to obtain high strength. When the foundation of the building is too weak to support building, steel pipes can be used as the supporting element of the building. In some construction projects, only complex spool systems are used for construction. The spool pipe assembly is used to construct oil refineries, petroleum refineries, and huge ships.

Pipe Spool Fabrication:

The raw pipes are pre-cut to specific sizes, pipe fittings, and other components. Pipe spools are fabricated offsite, including flanges, tees, elbows, and pipe fittings. All the parts are fitted temporarily, and the pipe spooling process occurs on partially joined parts. The pipe spooling process includes,

  1. Spool roll fitting and welding

In spool roll fitting and welding, the main pipe can be turned using a rolling machine, and the fitter does not need to alter his position to perform the task.

  1. Spool permanent fitting and welding

In spool position fitting and welding, a portion or portions of the main pipe go beyond the clearance limit forcing the fitter to move around the main pipe to complete the fitting and welding process. That is why spool position fitting and welding are generally more protracted than spool roll fitting and welding. Reducing the number of spool position fitting and welding is one of the pipe spool fabrication sequencing objectives.

Protection against Corrosion

A pipe spool can get corrupted very easily. There are various methods for protecting the pipe spool assembly against corrosion. The two most common ways to protect pipelines against corrosion are:

  1. A protective corrosion-resistant coating is applied like epoxy coating during the manufacturing process.
  2. Routine inspections can be done to check for cracks and corrosion while the pipeline is operational.

Pipe spools are fabricated using raw pipes and pipe fittings (flanges, elbows, tees, etc.) The raw pipes are cut to predetermined sizes compatible with the pipe fittings and other components.

Why pre-fabricate the Pipe Spools?

It is necessary to pre-fabricate the Pipe Spool. Pipe Spools are pre-fabricated to,

  • Enhance the quality of the assembly.
  • Reduce field installation costs.
  • Provides less workforce for the fabrication of spools on site.
  • Minimize the production delays because the fabrication process is weather independent.
  • Obtain better control of welding parameters, so fabrication must be done in the controlled environments.
  • Minimize the investment in production and testing equipment by the users.
  • Avoid unnecessary time delays.
  • Get specified and accurate dimensions specified by the client.
  • Obtain lesser assembly time and avoid rework on site.
  • Get accurate fitting to be used on the site.

Maintain technical properties defined by the clients.
